Bearded Dragon Regular (Pogona vitticeps) – Friendly, Curious, and the Ultimate Companion Reptile
Welcome the quintessential reptile companion into your home with the Bearded Dragon, the world’s most popular pet lizard. Renowned for their calm demeanor, inquisitive nature, and expressive behaviors—like throat-puffing, head-bobbing, and arm-waving—these desert natives make exceptional pets for beginners and experienced reptile keepers alike.
Key Features
Classic Natural Aesthetics: Displays timeless earthy tones ranging from sandy tan, golden brown, and muted orange to subtle grey patterning across their spiny scales and distinctive beard.
Highly Docile & Interactive: Famous for their gentle, approachable temperament. With regular handling, bearded dragons often enjoy perching on their keeper's shoulder or exploring outside their enclosure.
Distinctive Bearded Appearance: Features a spiny pouch under their chin (the "beard") that they can expand and darken when excited, defensive, or displaying naturally curious behavior.
Manageable Adult Size: Reaches a comfortable length of 18 to 24 inches (including tail) as adults, making them easy to house and handle compared to larger lizard species.
Omnivorous Diet: Thrives on a balanced mix of live feeder insects (dubia roaches, crickets, mealworms) and daily fresh salad (collard greens, mustard greens, squash, and bell peppers).
Essential Care & Enclosure Needs
To keep your bearded dragon healthy, active, and thriving, a properly configured arid setup is required:
Enclosure Size: Hatchlings can start in a smaller setup, but adults require a minimum enclosure size of 4x2x2 feet (120 gallons) to allow adequate space for exercise and thermal regulation.
Arid Basking & Temperature Gradient: Provide a focused basking area of 100°F–105°F (38°C–40°C) for adults (up to 110°F/43°C for juveniles) with a cool end around 75°F–85°F (24°C–29°C).
Essential High-Output UVB: A linear T5 HO 10.0 or 12% Desert UVB tube light spanning across the basking area is mandatory for proper calcium synthesis and metabolic bone health.
Low Humidity & Substrate: Maintain ambient humidity between 30% and 40%. Use paper towels, tile, or specialized desert substrate mixtures once the dragon reaches adulthood.
Why Choose a Bearded Dragon?
If you are looking for an engaging, gentle, and highly personable pet reptile with a rewarding lifespan of 10 to 15 years, the classic Bearded Dragon is the undisputed gold standard.
Pro Tip: Mount your linear UVB fixture and basking lights beforehand, ensuring thermal gradients are measured using a digital infrared temperature gun prior to bringing your new dragon home!
